Top five: Brownlow contenders (7)

1. Joel Selwood

Team: Geelong Cats

The All-Australian captain is my bet to pip Ablett to the finish and secure his maiden Brownlow Medal.

Ironically enough, it was only after the Fremantle game – in which Ryan Crowley tagged him to 13 disposals – that he came out of nowhere and truly broke out to become a legitimate Brownlow contender.

The courageous Geelong leader capitalised upon Ablett’s unspectacular displays towards the end of the season to produce some of the best form of his career, including a 32-disposal, 3-goal game against St. Kilda.

It is virtually impossible to split Selwood from Ablett in the Brownlow race. However, it is the uncertainty shrouding Ablett’s post-bye form that hands Selwood the slight edge in these rankings.

Will Selwood’s subdued mid-season work against his inspiring sprint to the finish line, or has Ablett just been too good?
