One of Britain’s brightest young prospects Callum Smith came into his fight this weekend for the English super-middleweight title with 5 first-round stoppages in a row.

Aged just 23 and standing at 6ft 3, Smith is really looking to be a fantastic prospect and is yet another of the Smith brothers destined for titles. Smith is very tall for the weight and comes in with that advantage against any opponent.

His opponent in this fight was Patrick Mendy, a man who became the youngest Prizefighter winner in 2010 and was expected to give Smith some rounds. He is a tough man and a step-up in class from anyone that Smith had been in with previously.

Smith more than lived up to the excitement surrounding him with a phenomenal first round knock-out. He was landing well with the jab and followed it up well with straight right-hands. Smith was picking his shots well and wasn’t looking for the knock-out early on.

He looked comfortable and seems to cause trouble with any punch that he lands. He landed a couple of good upper-cuts and showed a great variety of punches. It really was a brilliant display from a young man who seems set for the top of the sport.

At the moment he is destroying his opponents and the scary thing is that he isn’t even looking for the knock-out. The big shots are just coming naturally for him and he is going to have to be stepped-up in class yet again.

No-one can live with this young man at this level and it will be fascinating to see how he develops over the coming years. That is now 6 first round knock-outs in a row and he simply isn’t being tested by his opponents.

Callum Smith really does seem to be one of Britain’s brightest prospects and who knows just how far he can go. He is part of a fantastic fighting family which contains 3 British title holders and is part of the hugely successfully Joe Gallagher stable.

Gallagher has an impressive list of fighters including the likes of Scott Quigg, Anthony Crolla and of course the Smith Brothers. I am sure that Joe will keep Callum modest and down to earth as he continues to develop but the sky really does seem the limit for this young man.

Callum Smith the future star of British boxing?
