Five of the best: Captial One Cup contenders (2)

Arsenal

Let’s get the obvious one out of the way.

Eight years without a trophy might seem insignificant to some teams, and Arsene Wenger has helped the club move into the Emirates stadium while running a profit making business, but the simple fact is the game is about trophies, and the longer the Gunners remain out of the winners enclosure the further their descent from the top echelon continues.

There are no ‘winners’ in the Arsenal team anymore, and the exodus of star talent who have gone on to win titles elsewhere, such as Robin van Persie, Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri and Gael Clichy, will only go on if the north London side fail to grace winners medals around the necks of their players. The League Cup might not be what the Arsenal fans truly desire, but it would be a start, at stop the press mentioning the trophy drought.

The problem for Wenger is his squad is small and already stretched by injuries, so can he afford to treat England’s third competition as anything other than a distraction? An away tie at West Brom is not the kind of easing in the Gunners boss would have hoped for, but with places in the matchday squad readily available, the Arsenal reserves should not be lacking hunger.
