Five of the best: Captial One Cup contenders (5)

It was 1976 when the Saints last won a trophy - not including their Johnstone's Paint Trophy success back in 2010 - making Everton’s wait seem like a blink of the eye.

Southampton were regulars in the top flight but a dip into League One preceded a return to the elite. With Mauricio Pochettino in charge and money being spent on the likes of Victor Wanyama and Dani Osvaldo, the south coast side is very much in the image of the cosmopolitan Premier League.

Results have been interesting since Pochettino took over from the unfortunate Nigel Adkins. Victories against sides like Manchester City and United last season, and the weekend’s win at Liverpool thanks to a Dejan Lovren header, another summer signing, have been mixed with losses to bottom-half opponents such as Norwich this season and a home draw against rock-bottom Sunderland shows that consistency is the problem.

That makes the Saints prime candidates to follow in Swansea’s footsteps. The do or die nature of cup competition will hopefully mean Pochettino’s men do not become complacent, and a home tie against Bristol City should be a clear home win.

With players like Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Jay Rodriguez, this would not just be a win for Southampton but also any fans of the England national team.
