The third round of the League Cup kicks off this week.

The teams who qualified for Europe finally make their bow and it feels like the competition can finally get going.

Liverpool were the biggest name in the previous round and played host to Notts County, needing extra-time to see off their lower league opponents.

Newcastle squeezed past Morecambe and while the likes of Crystal Palace exited to lower league opposition there were no real cup upsets.

In five games time, someone will be crowned champions, picking up the first trophy of the season (Community Shield does not count) and securing a Europa League spot.

The Capital One Cup, to give it it’s official title, goes through cycles of importance and inconvenience, but with the competition for the league intensifying with Manchester City’s arrival on the scene and several former greats struggling to repeat past successes, there is plenty of reason for some clubs to focus their efforts on this easily winnable competition.
