Top five: Goalscoring defenders currently in the Premier League (1)

Everton left-back Leighton Baines scored his 20th and 21st Premier League goals to help his side to a 3-2 victory over West Ham United at Upton Park on Saturday.

The set-piece specialist scored two scintillating free-kicks against a helpless Jussi Jaaskelainen in the Hammers goal, and in doing so, moved into joint second place on the list of goalscoring defenders currently plying their trade in England's top-flight.

Baines was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United during the summer, after former Toffees boss David Moyes left Goodison Park to take over from the retired Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.

The reigning Premier League champions succeeded in their pursuit of Everton teammate Marouane Fellaini - signing the Belgian midfielder on transfer deadline day - but were unable to reach agreement with the Merseyside club over a fee for the England international.

Roberto Martinez is now reaping the rewards after retaining Baines's services for his debut campaign in charge at Goodison Park, and Everton fans are continuing to wax lyrical about the free-scoring full-back, who is now putting pressure on Ashley Cole for a place in the Three Lions starting line-up ahead of the World Cup in Brazil next summer.
