Jose Mourinho: I don't know my best Chelsea side

Published 7 Comments

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has conceded he does not yet know his best starting XI.

Mourinho has had a tough start to his second spell in charge at Stamford Bridge, losing three in a row as he oversaw the club's worst start since Roman Abramovich arrived in 2003. Despite that, the Blues went briefly to the top of the Premier League with their 2-0 win over Fulham on Saturday.

The former Real Madrid boss had caused a stir by regularly leaving two-time Chelsea player of the season Juan Mata out of his starting line-up so far this term.

Mourinho said Mata won't feature in his plans at Stamford Bridge until he learns to play in his preferred system out wide rather than in his favoured number 10 role, while also saying the Spaniard "doesn't work hard enough."

While the Special One has been clear about the formation and tactics he would like to use, he admits that he is not quite sure of the right personnel for the job as yet.

"Of course, I don’t know [what my best team is]," he told reporters. "But the players have to give me the answers. I cannot dig and dig and dig looking for the best team. The players must give me the answer.

"Do I have a doubt that [Branislav] Ivanovic is in this moment my right-back? I have no doubt. You see the way the guy performs. So it is up to them.

"If somebody is waiting for me to give shirts because of status and history, that’s not the point. Of course, I have some doubts in some positions and I think it’s normal."

Mourinho is likely to mix up his Chelsea side for their Capital One Cup clash against Swindon on Tuesday, with Mata expected to start.
