Arsenal fan Piers Morgan is often keen to depict himself as somewhat of a Gunners oracle, but the outspoken TV presenter embarrassed himself on Sunday after admitting he had never heard of Serge Gnabry.

Gnabry was named in the starting XI to face Stoke City at the Emirates Stadium following a late withdrawal from Theo Walcott, with the young German granted a fifth first team appearance.

The 18-year-old made his Premier League debut for Arsenal last season - and also played in Champions League group stages - but self-confessed Gunners nut Morgan had never heard of the forward.

Morgan tweeted: "Is it because it's 05.24am in LA that I've just seen our team-sheet and don't know who one of our players is? #Gnabry #Afc."

Arsenal fans soon rounded on Morgan for the apparent lack of knowledge he possesses about the club he loves, which led the former Daily Mirror editor to jump on the defensive.

Gnabry, meanwhile, played for 73 minutes against the Potters before he was replaced by fellow youngster Ryo Miyaichi, with victory already in the bag for the home side at that stage.

Aaron Ramsey continued his sensational scoring form with the opening goal of the encounter, before Geoff Cameron levelled, but Per Mertesacker and Bacary Sagna sent Arsenal top with a seventh straight win in all competitions.
