Following Paolo Di Canio's unsurprising sacking from Sunderland, the Black Cats are looking for a new manager.
The current favourite is ex Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo. I think he would be a great fit at Sunderland and this is why.
Di Matteo impressed during his time at Chelsea, he won the Champions League for the first time in the club's history and many fans were shocked at his sacking.
Originally he was just a caretaker manager after the sacking of Villas-Boas but his success made him full-time manager after winning the most prestigious tournament in Europe. He literally defended his way to the European trophy winning both the final and the semi-finals completely against the run of play.
Defending is especially important for a team battling relegation as they hang on for results and he clearly has the organisational skills to make a defence effective.
At Chelsea he kept a positive atmosphere in the dressing room and that is another key factor a team needs in order to stay up in England's top league. If he can pull the team together as he did at Chelsea good results will come.
This is the complete opposite of Di Canio who criticised his players in public, which must lead to a negative atmosphere and that lead to a player revolt which ultimately caused his downfall.
You cannot lead a team by fear, you have to show good man management which Di Canio has failed to show, however Di Matteo will be confident he can lift the atmosphere and get them the points they need to avoid relegation.
He was a crowd favourite at Chelsea and it was a surprise when he was sacked despite being third in the Premier League, but that is the Abramovich way, he seems a good manager and if he can get the Sunderland fans behind him he will be greatly successful I am sure.
