Manchester United made De Rossi transfer enquiry

Manchester United boss David Moyes asked former England manager Fabio Capello for his opinion on Roman midfielder Daniele de Rossi during the summer transfer window, it has been revealed.

The Old Trafford-based club had a frantic transfer window and were linked with moves for various midfielders including Cesc Fabregas, Ander Herrera and Sami Khedira.

They ended up landing Marouane Fellaini from Everton in a deal worth £27.5 million on deadline day but both Moyes and the club's new chief executive Ed Woodward came in for criticism of their scattergun approach in the summer transfer window.

Now according to Capello, Manchester United were eyeing up a move for De Rossi who looked like he could have been on his way out of Roma over the summer.

"If I'd been De Rossi, I would have gone to Manchester United to seek out a team where the ambition is very elevated," he told Fox Sports show Football Station.

"A few months ago, David Moyes asked me for an opinion on him. He's one that I couldn't be more positive about."

He added: "Together with Roberto Baggio and Del Piero, he is the greatest number ten in Italian football. Even today, he is still a game changer on the pitch."

The Red Devils stumbled to an embarrassing 4-1 defeat at the hands of rivals Manchester City on Sunday. They face Liverpool in the Capital One Cup tomorrow.
