Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado was stretchered off the field on Monday after suffering a horrific knee injury likely to end his 2013 season.
With one out in the seventh inning of his team's game against the Tampa Bay Rays Machado grounded a ball to second base and beat it out for an infield hit.
Upon reaching first base however, his knee buckled inward as he stood on the edge of the base and the 21-year-old fell to the ground in visible pain.
Lying on Tropicana Field Machado was attended to by Orioles staff and manager Buck Showalter.
He eventually left the field on a stretcher and had an X-ray taken at the stadium before boarding the team plane for Baltimore, where he will have a MRI on his left knee on Tuesday morning.
Only after the MRI has taken place will an official statement be made outlining the complete extent of the injury.
“It's potentially an injury that, you would think it would [end his season], just from the early reports,” Showalter said.
“But let's get everything in. But it certainly doesn't look very promising right now.
“They took an X-ray and somehow they couldn't develop the pictures. Had a little glitch there.
“I'm sure we won't get a full diagnosis until we get the MRI back in Baltimore tomorrow morning. I think Dr. [John] Wilckens is already setting it up at one of the best hospitals in the country, so we'll let them weigh in.”
In the bottom of the same inning Orioles shortstop Alexi Casilla suffered a head-first blow from a teammate’s knee on a diving attempt but fortunately stayed in the game.
The game ended in a 5-4 victory for the Rays leaving Baltimore’s bid for the Wild Card looking less and less likely.
