Manchester United manager David Moyes has confirmed that star striker Robin van Persie is set to miss the team’s Capital One Cup game with rivals Liverpool on Wednesday, as reported by

The Dutch hit-man strained his group just hours before the Reds’ 4-1 derby defeat to Manchester City on Sunday, and is unavailable for the game at Old Trafford.

Moyes does however believe that the 30-year-old could return to face West Bromwich Albion in United’s next league game on Saturday.

Speaking at press conference ahead of the Liverpool match, Moyes said: "I don't think Robin will play on Wednesday. But I think he'll have an outside chance for Saturday.”

The Scotsman has however hinted that the team he picks for the Capital One Cup clash will be a strong one.

"It's a big rivalry," he added. "And it could take on a bigger significance than people might expect."

Liverpool star man Luis Suarez is set to return to action at Old Trafford on Wednesday night following his suspension for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic towards the end of last season.
