When ending your college basketball career holding aloft the NIT championship, you'd be forgiven for thinking a NBA career was to follow. Yet for 5ft10in Pierre Jackson this dream always had its ifs and buts.
Few can doubt Jackson's work-ethic, nor his ability - his numerous college awards stand testament to this - but it is in fact his height that is holding him back. This is of course not something the point-guard can alter or change, however it is the reason why no NBA coach has been willing to take a gamble on him as of yet.
The NBA dream appeared destined to become a reality when the 2013 Draft saw Jackson end up on the books of the New Orleans Pelicans, yet for the time being the French league beckons.
Not all hope is lost though for Jackson, the Pelicans still retain the rights to the player and consistent form in France could well lead to a contract for the 2014-15 NBA season. This is not a certainty; one cannot be sure as to where Jackson will end up, but what we can all be sure of is that Jackson will not give up.
Throughout his high-school and college years Jackson has defied the odds that were heavily stacked against him, and who is to say this won't happen again? He will fight with every breath in his body to achieve his boyhood dream of an NBA berth, and therefore come next season the Pelicans could see the true gem they have before their eyes rather than discarding him once more.
It is true that Jackson is bound to give up a few points on the defensive end, not for the lack of trying but through simple height mismatches, however his speed, tenacity and attacking prowess can be sure to garner many points on offence. The simple question remains as to whether he is a gamble worth taking. The simple answer to this can be found in any game-tape from his Baylor Bears career - this kid is something special.
