Manchester City have moved into the pot for the League Cup fourth-round draw after a convincing 5-0 win against a tired looking Wigan Athletic side.
City boasted the likes of new signings Fernandinho and Stevan Jovetic, with the Montenegrin finding the net twice whilst the Brazilian also grabbed an assist.
Wigan, who are playing their second game in three days, were forced to rotate their squad. Scott Carson started on the bench whilst game time was given to Nouha Dicko, Fraser Fyvie and Roger Espinoza.
The game started scrappy, although chances fell for both teams. Neither team could capitalise until 33 minutes and it was City who opened the scoring, Edin Dzeko netted with a right foot finish after a superb pass from Fernandinho.
City were out for revenge, after Wigan managed to beat them in last season’s FA Cup Final.
Even though City dominated they failed to score again until the 59th minute, Jovetic made it 2-0 when he shot past the oncoming Wigan goalkeeper.
A superb free-kick in the 75th minute from substitute Yaya Toure made it 3-0 to City, capping off a fine display for the Blues. But they hadn’t finished their scoring yet.
Two more goals came in the final ten minutes, with Jovetic grabbing another goal before substitute Jesus Navas found a fifth on 86 minutes.
Wigan remained quiet throughout the game, although now can be glad that their already hectic fixture pile up is not increased.
It was a five-star display from City, who have now scored nine goals in their past two games. The fourth round draw will take place after Manchester United’s game against Liverpool on Wednesday.
