Philipp Lahm is one of the finest full-backs in Europe who has performed at the highest level for Bayern Munich consistently. He captained the club to Champions League glory last season.
After years of success at Munich, the right-back has been promoted to the midfield role by new coach Pep Guardiola.
And he hasn’t disappointed in his new role, dominating midfield in the absence of Bastian Schweinsteiger, bossing the midfield, picking out passes, building up attack, stretching out play and shielding his back-four. From a player who has always been deployed in the full-back position for all of his career, this is a remarkable feat - even for a player of Lahm’s caliber.
Guardiola heaped praise on the player, saying he is the most intelligent player he has ever coached. That much is evident from his recent displays in the red jersey.
"Philipp Lahm is perhaps the most intelligent player I have ever trained in my career. He is at another level," Guardiola recently told reporters.
After performing magnificently in his newly-assigned role, the ‘midfielder’ might be set for a more elongated stay in the middle of the park than many expected after his impressive displays.
This might be the making of a new midfield boss almost instantly, and might lead to the making of another midfield maestro.
