Derry Mathews has proved yet again that he is a man who you can never count out. A tough, durable, determined man who never lets a defeat set him back.

Aged 29, Mathews came into this fight against Curtis Woodhouse with a record of 33 wins, eight losses and two draws. He was coming off a win against Tommy Coyle in a fight in which he was under real pressure and was losing. He came up with a huge shot which left Coyle unable to continue.

Mathews believed that he was a level above the former professional footballer and that he would show just how good he is. He really did put on a top performance in a fight that didn’t last too long but was all action whilst it did last.

Mathews was loading up early on and really looking to put Woodhouse under pressure and was landing some good solid blows that were clearly having an effect. Mathews was in complete control in the first round and it looked as though Woodhouse was going to be blown away.

Woodhouse fought back and had a few moments of success with both trading shots and trying to stand their ground. Woodhouse showed real heart and determination to try and fight back but simply wasn’t good enough to make any sort of real impact of Mathews.

The fight ended in the fourth round with a vicious right hand that would have knocked out many a man. It was a perfect shot straight that connected perfectly. Woodhouse did brilliantly to get back to his feet. To get back up from a shot like that took real grit.

Despite the sheer desire to return to his feet he had no idea where he was. He was wobbling all over the place and the ref had no choice but to step in. Following the fight Woodhouse even admitted that he had no idea what had happened.

He said he couldn’t remember what shot he got hit with or even if he got back up again. It is not often that a punch has such an effect on a fighter and that shows the power that Derry carries at this weight division.

After the fight Mathews talked about another fight with rival Anthony Crolla. The two men have already faced-off twice in what has turned out to be a fantastic rivalry. It would be fascinating to see another fight between Mathews and Crolla and finally having a conclusion as to who is the better fighter.

Derry Mathews is a man who you can never write off!
