A 'weak' transfer window, poor performances, a manager and certain players out of their depth and a disappointing new chief executive have all been mentioned as reasons for Manchester United's poor start to the season; yet looking at the upcoming fixture list United will be well in the mix coming up to the Christmas rush.
The Premier League champions have five games in which they should be looking for a run of good results before they face Arsenal in mid-November. These matches, against West Brom, Sunderland, Southampton, Stoke and Fulham look much safer bets for victory than the upcoming fixtures for Chelsea and Manchester City, both of whom play each other in the same time period.
Another factor is the Champions League fixtures to be played, with United facing relatively easy and close to home tasks of Shaktar Donetsk and Real Sociedad twice whilst City face Bayern Munich and a long trip to CSKA Moscow just prior to the Chelsea game. City's games versus Everton and Chelsea's fixtures against Tottenham and Newcastle (away, where they lost last season) with the two also facing each other mean that United should be ahead of one, if not the pair, before they face Arsenal in November. Beating Arsenal may well place them top of the league for the run up to the Christmas fixture list.
