Chelsea's long-running pursuit of FC Porto striker Jackson Martinez seems destined to fail, with A Bola reporting that the Colombian international is set to sign a new and improved contract to stay with the Portuguese giants.

Martinez's agent has confirmed that, following talks with Porto director Antero Henrique, a new deal is close to completion, dashing the hopes of Jose Mourinho who had been linked with the 26-year-old as an alternative to Wayne Rooney.

Chelsea ended up signing Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o on a free transfer from Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala, with Mourinho having been thwarted in his attempts to sign Martinez and Rooney.

The 32-year-old joined the Stamford Bridge outfit on a one-year-deal. Mourinho opted for Eto'o as his backup option having managed the powerful frontman during his time at Inter Milan, where they won the Champions League together in 2010.

But Eto'o has so far failed to impress during the early stages of his Chelsea career, leading to suggestions that Mourinho may be back in the market for a new striker when the transfer window re-opens in January.

However, Martinez is seemingly no longer an option for the Blues, with news of his new contract putting an end to all the talk of a switch - for now at least.
