Lazio are planning a free transfer move for Manchester United outcast Federico Macheda when his contract expires at the end of the season, according to reports in Italy, says Sport Witness.

The 22-year-old striker has been heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford after struggling to cement his place in the first-team.

Red Devils boss David Moyes recently allowed the Italian to leave the Premier League champions on loan, linking up with Championship outfit Doncaster Rovers.

Macheda capped an impressive debut with a brace, to earn a 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest at the Keepmoat Stadium.

That performance alone has thrown him back into the spotlight in his homeland, with suggestions that the Serie 'A' giants are ready to offer him the chance to resurrect his career at Stadio Olimpico.

Macheda was born in Rome, and came through Lazio's youth system before Manchester United swooped to sign him in 2007.

Vladimir Petkovic is hoping that the youngster will be keen to return to the club where it all started, in an attempt to realise his full potential, following a stagnant few years at Manchester United.
