Former Manchester United defender Gary Pallister believes David Moyes can cope with the pressure of being scrutinised by the media.

The former Everton boss has received heavy criticism for his side's mediocre start to the season - which has seen them win just two of their opening five Premier League games.

The Premier League champions put in a poor display against Manchester City on the weekend - which has led to fans questioning if he is ready for such a high profile job.

Before the season kicked off, Moyes was under pressure from Manchester United supporters to bring in several high-profile signings however Moyes was only able to attract Marouane Fellaini to Old Trafford.

Despite his average start to his Manchester United reign, Pallister believes Moyes needs time to fill the humongous void left by Sir Alex Ferguson.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Moyes said: “The spotlight is on David Moyes but I think he can handle it. Manchester United is a bit different to most clubs in this country.

“It will take him a little time to settle and get to know the players and for the players to get to know him.

“Some of the headlines that have been written about David are a little bit out of order.

“I don’t think the criticism has been fair. Everybody is going to look at this situation where the great man has retired and David Moyes has got to come in and try to fill those boots and it is going to be a difficult task.

“I’ve never known a start to fixture list like this even since I was at the club. It’s been really difficult.

“I think the team has performed OK. They haven’t set the world alight but I thought the Bayer Leverkusen game was fantastic.”

Moyes will be hoping he can relinquish some of the pressure when his side take on Liverpool in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday night.
