Gus Poyet has revealed he has been monitoring the plight of struggling clubs in case of job opportunities, according to the Metro.

The former Brighton and Hove Albion manager has dismissed by the south coast club on the back of a Championship play-off defeat in mysterious circumstances.

After losing to rivals Crystal Palace at home, its alleged that somebody defecated in the away dressing room.

Poyet was critical of his side and was suspended and eventually sacked for his comments after a statement was revealed whilst the Uruguayan was working as a pundit for the BBC at the Confederations cup.

Since the sacking of Paolo Di Canio from Sunderland, Poyet has been named one of the favourites to take over at the Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats are bottom after five games with just one point so far meanwhile Brighton under new manager Oscar Garcia haven't reached the heights of last season so far, they are tenth.

The 45-year-old said: '‘My opportunity to manage Sunderland is there. I’m waiting. Nervously.

‘'Since the start of the season, I’ve dedicated myself to watching the games of teams that might call me if things weren’t going too well.’'

Poyet forged a successful playing career in Spain and England, most notably playing for Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.

He faces competition for the Mackems' hotseat from former Blues teammate Roberto Di Matteo.
