Manchester United left-back Alexander Buttner was pleased with his performance in Wednesday night's morale-boosting Capital One Cup victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Javier Hernandez's clever flick shortly after half-time secured the Red Devils' progression to the last 16, where they will face another home tie against Chris Hughton's Norwich City. It was a welcome victory for United boss David Moyes, who has received hefty criticism in the wake of the club's 4-1 humiliation at the hands of rivals local Manchester City on Sunday.

The Scot, who has also been lambasted for failing to sufficiently bolster his squad during the summer transfer window, made a number of changes to this starting lineup for last night's match. Among them was Buttner, who was chosen for a rare start ahead of French stalwart Patrice Evra.

Former Dutch U21 international Buttner, who arrived at the club from Eredivisie outfit Vitesse in August 2012, has so far largely failed to impose himself at United and was heavily linked with a move away from the club in recent months.

At one stage it looked as if his Premier League exit was a foregone conclusion, but a proposed loan move to Turkish giants Besiktas never materialised.

However, despite the persistent rumours of his impending exit, the 24-year-old was clearly delighted at being back in the famous red shirt.

"It's good for me to play these games," he told the club's official website. "It's a good level and I can see where I'm at. It was a good game and I felt I did well."

Buttner, who was also linked to Premier League club Southampton prior to joining United, also claimed that every player wanted to win after Sunday's disappointment.

"It was an important win. Everybody wanted to win because of what we saw in the last game. We played as a team today and you could see on everybody's faces that we wanted to win.

"Everyone knows about what happened in the last game. The result was not good and we know we have to fight if we want to win games. Today, you saw people running in the last second of the game. We played well today," he added.

United return to action against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday afternoon.
