Mesut Özil was fraudulently offered to Manchester United prior to his transfer from Real Madrid to Arsenal, and the father of the Germany international is now set to press criminal charges.
Özil was a club record £42.5 million acquisition for Arsenal on the final day of the summer transfer window, but was reportedly made available to Manchester United before he moved to north London.
Reports in the German press claim that the player's registration was touted to Manchester United on August 7 - 26 days before joining Arsenal - but neither Özil or his father, who is also his agent, were aware of such activity.
Mustafa Özil now alleges those to have approached Manchester United purporting to be representing the then Real Madrid midfielder were impostors, and he is now prepared to sue those involved.
“Some flimsy people have done, what I never would have considered possible," Özil senior is reported to have told Kolner Express.
“Someone tried to contact Manchester United and pretended to be me. This is not a trivial offence. We will get to the bottom of this now.”
Özil, meanwhile, has proved to be an instant hit at the Emirates Stadium, having contributed three assists in his two Premier League appearances for the club - both of which they have won.
