Cristiano Ronaldo scored a 96th minute penalty on Wednesday to give Real Madrid the win against newly promoted Elche.

Madrid took the lead through a Ronaldo free-kick six minutes after the start of the second half, before Elche's Richmond Boakye scored in injury time to level the game.

However, with just moments left in the match, Pepe went down in the penalty area under the challenge of Carlos Sanchez and Real were awarded a penalty. The decision looked harsh, and Sanchez was understandably apoplectic with the referee.

After the game, Elche defender Edu Albacar made his thoughts on the incident clear:

"The match has been stolen from us.

"Anyone who watched the game can decide why Madrid won, it's very clear."

Despite being absent from the Spanish top flight for nearly 24 years, Elche looked almost as good as Madrid, who spent over £100m in the summer.

Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti was disappointed in his team's performance, admitting they will have to improve to beat rivals Atletico at the weekend:

"We suffered a lot, especially at the end. The team did not control the match after Ronaldo's goal.

"The important thing is the result but it's not enough, we have to play better.

"Playing like that we will not win the derby - above all we have to play with more intensity and personality."

Real Madrid paid a world record £85m for Tottenham forward Gareth Bale in the summer, as well as splashing the cash on the likes of Asier Illarramendi and Isco. Madrid also sold fan favourite Mesut Özil to Arsenal.
