Newcastle United midfielder Yoan Gouffran has declared that his side want to win the Capital One Cup this season
The Frenchman scored the second goal in their 2-0 win over Leeds United in last night's second-round tie and will now face Manchester City at St. James Park in the last 16.
The former Bordeaux player insists the Toon squad are not taking the cup lightly.
"In France the League Cup is not well thought of by fans or the teams or the players," Gouffran told the Evening Chronicle.
"Often a reserve team is put out in these competitions.
"Here, though, with the way the league is we want to get out there and try to win some silverware.
"That is what we will try and do. We want to get as far as we can."
In previous years Premier League clubs have used the League Cup to blood reserve and youth team players, but in more recent seasons clubs have taken the cup a lot more seriously and see it as a chance for early season silverware.
Newcastle face a tough last 16 match having already been on the end of a Manchester City masterclass this season - losing the opening Premier League fixture 4-0 at the Etihad.
But with the prospect of a home tie against last season's league runners-up, Newcastle will see the game as a chance to prove their ambition as they look to claim their first trophy since the Intertoto Cup win in 2006.
