Having just lost to their north London rivals Tottenham in the league, Arsenal went to the Allianz Arena to attempt to overturn a 3-1 deficit against Bayern Munich.
Seven points behind Tottenham in the league with 10 games to go and facing a thrashing at the hands of the eventual champions Arsenal fans feared the worse.
But Arsenal turned up looking like a new side and quickly took the lead when Olivier Giroud smashed home a Theo Walcott cross.
They rode their luck at times but controlled the match against the most formidable team in Europe. Laurent Koscielny scored late on to make it 2-0 and level on aggregate.
They couldn't find the third and went out on the away goals rule. Although out, Arsenal were uplifted and have since won 11 away games on the spin - a club record.
They finished fourth in the league and currently sit top of the Premier League after five games.
