Derbyshire have been relegated to County Championship Division Two after losing to Warwickshire in their final match of the season.
Warwickshire bowled the hosts out for just 103, banishing any last hope of securing a bonus batting point that could have kept Derbyshire up.
Keith Barker and Maurice Chambers shone with the ball for the visitors and despite a spirited 51 from Shivnarine Chanderpaul in the first innings, relegation always looked likely.
Barker finished the innings with figures of 5-55 and Derbyshire’s misery was compounded as the follow-on was enforced.
The second innings had moments of hope with Chanderpaul again hitting a half century, while wicketkeeper Tom Poynton added a quick fire 41 off just 43 balls.
The match did not last past day three, however as Warwickshire stormed to an impressive victory by an innings and 168 runs.
In fact, Warwickshire did not even need to take the final wicket as Tony Palladino retired hurt and was unable to bat after being struck on the hand in the first innings by a ball from England seamer Boyd Rankin.
Derbyshire were soundly beaten, and ultimately Division One proved a step too far for Karl Krikken’s men, who managed just three wins from the season.
Coach Karl Krikken admitted that promotion had been a massive step up and sadly, one that proved a bridge too far for Derbyshire.
Their experience has not been wasted though, as Krikken promised to work on becoming more consistent over all four days of the match and losing less quick wickets.
Chanderpaul will remain at the Racecourse Ground for another season and Derbyshire’s squad looks strong enough to bounce straight back next season.
Derbyshire knew of their fate once they had been bowled out in the first innings, meaning Nottinghamshire and Somerset will live to fight another season in the top division.
