Manchester United responded to the 4-1 humiliation by Manchester City by sending another bitter rival, Liverpool out of the Capital One Cup with a 1-0 victory.

Javier Hernandez converted coolly from a Wayne Rooney corner to settle the match just 46 seconds into the second half. It's a result which has silenced the critics for David Moyes who has now got a victory against one of the top sides.

The first half was cagey and United were slightly the better side and had the better of few chances.

In the second half after Hernandez opened the scoring both sides improved and Liverpool came into the game and David de Gea was forced into a fine save from Luis Suarez who hit the side netting and went agonisingly close by hitting the crossbar from a free-kick.

However United didn't park the bus, Shinji Kagawa also hit the bar with a fine solo effort and then after a neat one-two Kagawa set up Nani who blazed over.

Rooney also came close with a free-kick but Manchester United claimed the win, to set up a home tie with Norwich.
