Manchester United will renew their interest in Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera this January, according to the Telegraph.
The Red Devils attempted to sign the 24-year-old towards the end of the summer transfer window, bidding a reported £25m, but Athletic refused to sell for less than his £30.5m buyout clause.
The Telegraph report that United were concerned Herrera was not currently good enough to be a first-team regular at Old Trafford - but scouts are now poised to watch him in action against Granada next Monday night.
Herrera joined Athletic from Real Zaragoza in 2011 and helped the club reach the Europa League and Copa del Rey finals under the management of Marcelo Bielsa.
United, though, forked out £27.5m on Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini on transfer deadline day, leaving question marks over whether or not they have £30m to spend on another central midfielder.
Fellaini and Michael Carrick are currently United's two first-choice midfielders, while they have the likes of Tom Cleverley and Anderson as back-up.
