Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas has admitted that the club did enquire about the services of Chelsea playmaker Juan Mata.
However, the former Blues manager has insisted that the club were never close to signing the player.
Mata has been given a bit-part role in Jose Mourinho's side so far this campaign and was linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge in the last transfer window.
When discussing Spurs' past interest in the Spanish star, Villas-Boas told reporters: "When top players become available, when their situation changes at a club, and particularly for a player like Juan Mata, you enquire about the situation, but nothing went further than a simple enquiry."
Villas-Boas will go head-to-head with his old club tomorrow as he will look to get one over his old boss Jose Mourinho.
Mata will be eyeing a first-team spot in the all-London clash after impressing in the Capital One Cup in midweek but it's expected that Brazilian ace Oscar will retain his Premier League place.
Tottenham go into the game sitting above their rivals in the league table after securing four wins from their opening five fixtures.
