Should coach Trinkieri maintain his current position as head coach of the national team? And after that will the squad need further screening?
There are many variables that will affect these two decisions but the most important is the one of the FIBA wild card.
Greece, after its unsuccessful participation in this year’s European Championship in Slovenia, fail to qualify to the next year’s Mundobasket in Spain and everybody in Greece is waiting for Fiba’s decision about the submission of the so called “wild card”, which awards a place in the competition.
If this happens it is thought that coach Trinkieri will get a second chance to work with the Greece’s squad.
If this scenario is not confirmed and Greece do not participate in the following Mundobasket, then the most possible scenario is that coach Trinkieri will be replaced by coach Katsikaris who, after his resignation from the Russia national team, is still a free agent.
His name was also mentioned with the Greece national team before the European Championship but he chose to sign a contract with the Russia Association, a contract that was surprisingly terminated a few days before the first jump ball of the tournament mentioned above, hence the disappointing performance in the tournament from the Russia National Team.
After a recent interview that coach Trinkieri gave there are more doubts in his abilities. In this interview Trinkieri admitted that he was wrong about the selection of the squad and if he had a second chance he would have made things and especially the selection in a different way.
Although that we should stand up and applaud when someone admits a mistake of him and encourage more people to behave in such a manner we should focus on another point.
So we think that Greece needs a coach that will not experiment but a coach that already has a standard plan in his mind and knows exactly what he wants from his players.
On the other hand someone might say that if Trinkieri was given another chance, he could work miracles with this squad now that he has learnt his lesson from the failure in the last European Championship.
As said above the issue of the “wild card” is the key factor in this debate but my opinion is that with or without the “wild card” coach Trinkieri had his chance and he missed it, it’s time to move on. So the issues are not two. The hot issue is the one of the coach the rest is just stories.
