Newton Heath LYR Football Club was founded by the the Carriage and Wagon department in 1878.
In 1902 the club was suffering from financial problems and the board decided to make a fresh start. That new start included giving the club a new name, "Manchester United".
In 1910, Manchester United moved to the iconic ground that is Old Trafford.
Since its beginnings many greats have graced the pitch for the Red Devils. Here are the top five greatest Manchester United players of all-time:
5. Peter Schmeichel
Manchester United have never had a goalkeeper as good as the Great Dane.
Peter Schmeichel had a fantastic ability to make the most acrobatic of saves, as well as a charismatic leadership that demanded the attention of the defenders who were in front him. His ability to organise that defence and prevent himself from having to make any kind of highlight-reel save may have been his greatest attribute.
The Manchester United great signed from Brondby in August of 1991, and Sir Alex Ferguson described him as "the bargain of the century."
Schmeichel's last contribution for the club came in their most famous year, 1999. After winning the English Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League it was only fitting that the Great Dane bowed out with a treble.
4. Eric Cantona
King Cantona signed for Manchester United from Leeds in 1992, and there may have never been a better footballer to grace the Theatre of Dreams.
With unquantifiable skill and undeniable stardom the Frenchman led the Red Devils to four English Premier League titles in just five seasons.
If he had stayed longer then who knows what else he could have accomplished at the club, but I guess we can only dream. Despite having been at the club for such a short period of time the King has cemented himself as an icon at Manchester United.
3. Ryan Giggs
He has grown up through the Manchester United academy and has withstood the test of time. He has even outlasted Sir Alex Ferguson himself.
From grandfather, to father, to son each generation can say that one of their heroes is Ryan Giggs. He has won 13 English Premier League titles and two Champions League crowns making himself the most decorated player in English footballing history.
The most amazing thing? He is still on the pitch looking to win more...
2. Sir Bobby Charlton
An absolute Manchester United legend.
He survived the Munich air disaster and led the club's revival. With European glory in 1968 they became the first English club to ever win the European Cup. Not many people embody Manchester United like Sir Bobby Charlton does, as he rose from the depths of disaster and led the club to greatness.
Knighthood has immortalised one of the greatest footballers to ever play the game, and Manchester United fans will always make sure that the name is revered, respected, and never forgotten.
1. George Best
Nobody had the same technical ability and leadership qualities as George Best. He dazzled Manchester United supporters with sublime skill and inventive play.
His ability and charismatic nature made him one of the first celebrity footballers. He was voted into the IFFHS World Player of the Century election in 1999, cementing his stature as one of the greatest footballers ever.
'Maradona good, Pele better; George Best.'
And he is the Best player to have ever worn the red jersey of Manchester United.
