Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic is the best defender David Moyes has ever worked with, and the new manager will urge Old Trafford officials to offer the player a new contract, reports the Daily Mail.

The 31-year-old has already entered the final 12 months of his current deal, and with some question marks over the Serbian stopper's fitness - after he missed the majority of the 2012/13 campaign through injury - there had been doubts about the skipper's long-term future.

However, Moyes has dispelled any uncertainty surrounding Vidic's role within the team, after heaping praise on him and fellow central defensive partner Rio Ferdinand for the impact they've made during his short spell in charge of the Premier League champions.

"Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja are two top centre halves," enthused the former Everton boss. "Vida is probably the best centre half I have ever worked with. He is that good, he really is.

"Rio has really impressed me with how fit he has been. He has not missed a day's training since we have been back."

Apart from the humbling 4-1 defeat at the hands of local rivals Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium last weekend, Manchester United have looked relatively solid at the back, and that has been in no small part down to the commanding displays from Vidic.

"If you took away the City game you are finding it hard to pick faults in any of them," Moyes added. "I didn't know about Vida's contract. I have not looked into it yet. I am sure the chief executive and the club will be doing that.

"He's not old. He is a really top centre half. The best I have worked with, that's for sure."
