Per Mertesacker looks set to be offered an extension to his current deal that is nearing its last year, reports the Sunday Mirror.

Mertesacker has been nothing short of a colossus in the back four for Arsenal this season, the German has been ever present so far this campaign already starting eight games in three different competitions thus far.

Back in 2011 when Mertesacker signed from Werder Bremen for £9.9 million, it was not always plain sailing for the tall German defender as he struggled to settle into the pace of the Premier League.

He is not the quickest but has great awareness and a brilliant understanding of the game which has held him in good stead in the last couple of seasons. He now has a very good centre-back partnership with the ever improving Laurent Koscielny which has helped make Arsenal genuine title contenders.

Mertesacker has shown all the capabilities of a great leader, he bares a striking resemblance to Arsenal legend Tony Adams and has also captained the side in Thomas Vermaelen and Mikel Arteta's absence both through injury.

He has shown that he can effectively lead this Arsenal side. He has also chipped in with some very important goals in his short spell at Arsenal and continues to look the part. His best performance in an Arsenal shirt was undoubtedly the win 2-0 win at Anfield early last season where Mertesacker was imperious at the heart of the Arsenal back four.

The 29-year-old German has done a lot more than just contribute to this Arsenal side he has been one of the key factors in Arsenal's recent run of form - keeping things solid while the likes of Mesut Özil, Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere are given the license to go and create.

His impressive organisational skills have been a very important feature of recent Arsenal performances and they recorded a very impressive eighth straight away win in the Premier league yesterday at Swansea City - winning 2-1 where once more Mertesacker was his usual commanding self.
