Derby County boss Nigel Clough has been sacked by the club after a run of poor results - leaving them in 14th place.

The decision came after a 1-0 defeat to rivals Nottingham Forest. Clough had been in charge of the Rams since January 2009.

The defeat to Nottingham Forest is the clubs third defeat in just eight days, capping off the run of miserable results for the Rams.

A club statement read: "After much consideration, the board feel it is time to move Derby County forward to the next level.

"The search is well under way to identifying and appointing a successor, and further announcements will be made in due course.

"The ownership group remain steadfastly committed to the club and maintain their desire to compete at the top end of the Championship this season."

Clough began his management back in 1998, managing Burton after spells of success playing for Nottingham Forest, Liverpool and Manchester City. He also has 14 caps for England.

The fourth longest-serving manager in the Football League - behind Arsenal's Arsene Wenger, Exeter City's Paul Tisdale and Oxford's Chris Widler - will now have to seek employment elsewhere following what seems to be a slightly harsh decision.

He becomes the fourth manager to be sacked in the Football League after Swindon, Carlisle and Sunderland also opted for a change in management.
