United’s worst ever start to a Premier League season followed a transfer window that saw them fail to land their major transfer targets, but an impressive United display saw them beat Bayer Leverkusen 4-2 in the Champions League - yet Moyes believes United cannot compete for the most coveted title in European football.
Speaking to reporters, Moyes stated: "To win the Champions League, you need five or six world-class players. Look at Bayern Munich, they have it.
"Look at Barcelona, who had it in the past and Real Madrid, who have maybe got it now. That's the level you have to be at to win it. We've not got that yet but what we have got is experience."
United face a tricky trip to Ukraine to play Shakthar Donetsk on Wednesday, and Moyes will be keen to bounce back from Saturday’s shock home defeat to West Brom.
Any criticism of Sir Alex Ferguson’s tenure at United would be aimed at their relative lack of success in the Champions League; he only won it twice during his 26 years in charge, and was comprehensively beaten in two finals by a Barcelona team who were at the peak of the powers.
Whilst the announcement may not come as a great surprise to most; given United’s poor start to the season, securing a place for next years Champions League may be a more realistic target then winning it, however, Moyes statement will hardly galvanise United fans, who’s team are currently languishing in a disappointing 12th place.
