There was speculation regarding both Cesc Fabregas and Thiago Alcântara being possible arrivals to Old Trafford during the summer transfer window, yet was there another Barcelona midfielder who Manchester United missed a trick on.

Alex Song may have been a spectacular buy for United. Still only 26, with Premier League experience, out of favour at his current club and a great assist rate, he could be an available answer if United are to purchase in January.

His assists and stats illustrate that he has a valid partnership with Robin van Persie, with passes that players such as Nani and Hernandez would appreciate too.

Song has failed to cement his place in the Barcelona starting line-up since his move from Arsenal in 2012.

United look likely to try to bolster their squad as it becomes evident that more and more pressure is being placed to buy players able to heighten their competitiveness.
