Speaking to Arsenal Player after the Gunners' 2-1 win over Swansea City, defender Per Mertesacker spoke about the Gunners' recent results and the spirit within the squad. Mertesacker also highlighted some areas that the Gunners need to improve.

On his defensive partnership with Laurent Koscielny, he said:

"We still have to improve the communication and the clean sheets. We don't get clean sheets at the moment, so that's something we have to improve."

The Gunners have conceded more goals than any other team in the Premier League's top five, but have netted just one less than top-scorers Manchester City. Mertesacker spoke about the team spirit that has led the Gunners to be top of the table:

"We need to stick together at the moment more than ever. I can feel that everybody is capable of doing more than usual.

"You can feel the special team spirit at the moment."

Arsenal sit top of the Premier League, despite injuries to wingers Theo Walcott, Santi Cazorla, Lukas Podolski and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Mertesacker is confident that the spirit of the team is enough to make up for the lack of options in the squad:

"We lost a lot of players at the start of the season. We have to replace four good wingers at the moment who can make the difference, but you can see Serge Gnabry stepped in and scored his first goal for Arsenal today. Aaron Ramsey is stepping in all the time.

"You can see how everyone celebrates together - there's a proper mentality at the moment that we can be proud of."

Arsenal take on Napoli on Tuesday in the Champions League, with Serge Gnabry ready to step in for his fourth consecutive Gunners game since making his first-team debut against Stoke City. Mertesacker says his fellow German can become a future star:

"He's a young player with a lot of potential. He is capable of scoring goals, assisting and doing a lot for the defence as well.

"He can present himself at the moment because we have a lack of wingers. It's a good opportunity for him to show his potential. The way he does it is outstanding."

The German international has brought solidity to the Gunners' defence since joining from Werder Bremen. Arsenal hope to keep a clean sheet on Tuesday at home to Napoli, who signed Gonzalo Higuain in the summer - a player Arsenal were strongly linked with.
