Reports are surfacing that Britain's Amir Khan has decided not to go ahead with his proposed December 7 showdown with Devon Alexander because he is in pole position to land a fight with Floyd Mayweather for next May.

Mayweather is boxings biggest name by quite some distance and a fight with Khan would be extremely lucrative for the man from Bolton should it come off.

If the rumours are indeed to be believed then a bout between Mayweather and Khan will be penciled in for May 3 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

There had been talk of Mayweather taking on Khan at Wembley at some point in the future, but that seems highly unlikely now due to tax reasons, which means Mayweather wouldn't make as much money in the UK due to higher amounts of tax he would be forced to pay.

Khan last fought in April when he defeated Julio Diaz over 12 rounds in Sheffield, despite being floored in the 4th. That means that by the time a proposed bout with Mayweather comes around, that Khan will have been dormant for over a year and that kind of inactivity is not ideal going in against one of the greatest fighters in history in Floyd Mayweather.

Mayweather's last action saw him face off against highly-rated Mexican, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in what was supposed to be the American's toughest fight to date. Mayweather put on a boxing masterclass that night though and completely outclassed his much younger, bigger and stronger opponent over the 12 round distance, handing Canelo his first ever defeat.

Devon Alexander is believed to be unhappy with these developments and understandably so as it seemed he and Khan were not far from officially announcing a December 7 showdown. It is now believed that Alexander will face former Khan opponent Zab Judah in December at the Barclays Centre in New York City.

This is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity for Khan though and no one can blame the 2004 Olympic silver medalist for grabbing it with both hands if the rumours do indeed turn out to be true.

He will make a career high purse and going into the fight he will believe he has the beating of Mayweather.

Whether he believes it after a couple of minutes in the ring with the multiple division world champion is another matter though and providing the fight does come off, I and most of the boxing world for that matter will be expecting Mayweather to prevail and probably via a knockout.
