USC Athletic director Pat Haden announced early on Sunday that Lane Kiffin had been fired hours after a 62-41 beat down at the hands of Arizona State.
The loss dropped the Trojans to 3-2 on the season with a 0-2 record in Pac-12 conference games. Kiffin’s dismissal comes just before an open week, as the Trojans do not play again until Oct. 10th.
Kiffin compiled a 28-15 record in just over three years at USC, but came under fire in 2012 after starting the season ranked No. 1 overall and stumbling to a 7-6 finish.
Tensions reached a peak earlier this season during a home loss to Washington State that led to a chorus of boos from Trojans fans and chants to “fire Kiffin.”
Kiffin’s tenure with the Trojans was marred by NCAA infractions stemming from the recruitment of former Trojan running back Reggie Bush. USC received a two year bowl ban and lost 30 scholarships over a three year span.
Taking over for legendary USC coach Pete Carroll, Kiffin left his position as head coach at the University of Tennessee in January 2010 for what he called his “dream job.”
Kiffin’s first two seasons as USC head coach were widely considered a success, and a 10-2 season in 2011 convinced many across the nation that the Trojans were ready to reemerge on a national stage.
Starting the season off as the No. 1 overall ranked team, the Trojans started the season 6-1 before losing five out of their last six contests.
Locker room altercations and off the field distractions were widely reported following the season, and the Trojan fan base began to call for a coaching change.
The 62-41 drubbing in Tempe was the second time in 10 games that the Trojans had given up 60 or more points.
