Manchester United are reported to have identified William Carvalho of Sporting as a potential acquisition as the club bid to reinforce their midfield during the January transfer window.
According to talkSPORT, the 21-year-old is among a list of targets for the next transfer period with the Premier League champions particularly keen to bolster their options in the middle of the park.
Carvalho has made eight appearances for Portugal under-21s but has yet to establish himself in the Sporting first-team, although it is unclear if the Lisbon club would be willing to listen to offers for the youngster.
David Moyes will reportedly be backed with upwards of £50 million in the transfer window and Carvalho represents one of a number of possible signings as the club look to make up for a summer of failure.
Maroaune Fellaini was the only signing of note made by Manchester United before the transfer deadline, joining from Everton for £27 million, after the club had missed out on a number of other targets.
Thiago Alcantara and Cesc Fabregas were notable misses by Manchester United, while they also failed to capture Ander Herrera of Athletic Bilbao.
Manchester United could, however, reportedly return for Herrera in the New Year with midfield still an area in which Moyes is keen to improve.
