New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez is to go under the knife in a bid to resolve the long-standing issue with his torn labrum, according to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport.

The 26-year-old is expected to have surgery on his shoulder over the next two weeks, with the operation set to end Sanchez's season prematurely.

Sanchez's future with the Jets looks pretty bleak - despite having two years left to run on his contract, it's well documented that he has no long-term future with Rex Ryan's side and is expected to be released at the end of the season.

Jets fans have been eagerly anticipating the day when Sanchez's tenure in Gotham comes to an end, with his spell best described as "a series of shocking highs and astounding lows".

From dating starlets and being booed by Knicks fans to two consecutive AFC Championship Game appearances, Sanchez's Jets career has been eventful.

The timing of this surgery should allow Sanchez to get healthy in time for the 2014 free-agency period, enabling him to find a new home.

Gone are the days of Sanchez competing for a starting berth, but assuming he can return to full fitness, he should be able to find a team where he can do a job as a back-up quarterback.
