Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano - Corinthians to West Ham
Many were astounded and gobsmacked when Alan Pardew pulled off the major coup of Argentine international duo Tevez and Mascherano in August 2006.
The talented pair, who had previously played for Brazilian outfit Corinthians, were linked with a number of Europe's big-hitters, and their arrival at Upton Park was shrouded in murky rumours concerning third-party ownership.
Mascherano rarely featured for the Hammers before leaving for top-flight rivals Liverpool in 2007. Tevez, meanwhile, who has courted further controversy in England during spells with Manchester rivals United and City, became a fans favourite after preserving the club's top-flight status.
