Former Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers has called the Los Angeles Lakers the best franchise in sports history.

Rivers, who coached the Boston Celtics for nine years, has recently taken over as head coach and Senior Vice President of Basketball Operations at the Los Angeles Clippers.

Despite his long-term affiliation with the Boston Celtics and his new role at the Los Angeles Clippers, Rivers believes the LA Lakers are the best NBA side around.

Speaking to Yahoo! Sports, Rivers said on the LA Lakers: "The risk is all mine.

"To go to an organization that hasn't won but [two] playoff series in their entire history, in a town where the other team is the best franchise in sports history – that's risk."

The 51-year-old's claims are both bizarre and untrue, as the Clippers are supposed to despise the Lakers and his former side - the Boston Celtics - have won 17 NBA Championships compared to the LA Lakers' 16.

The Clippers kick off the new NBA season at the Staples Center against their rivals on Tuesday 29 October before facing Golden State Warriors two days later.
