Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa, who was wanted by Liverpool during the summer transfer window, has topped the AP player rankings after an impressive week of performances for his club.
The Brazilian was on target twice against Osasuna last week, before finding the net against Real Madrid to clinch victory for Atletico at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday evening.
A fine few days of displays for Atleti saw Costa voted by a 26-person panel of global football journalists as the top player of the past week, with the 24-year-old beating Luis Suarez by 50 votes.
Suarez was on target twice for Liverpool on his Premier League return as the Reds triumphed 3-1 against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
The Uruguayan worked superbly in tandem with Daniel Sturridge against the Black Cats, but Liverpool could have also had Costa among their number had they been successful in their summer bid.
Liverpool were credited with a £21 million bid for Costa in August, which Atletico chose to reject, and the player eventually agreed to extend his stay at the Vicente Calderon.
Costa has scored 28 goals in 53 appearances for Atletico, including eight goals in only seven games for the club this season.
