Club record signing Mesut Özil could turn out to be a bargain at this rate - the £42.4m recruit was the star of the show again on Tuesday night and scored his first goal in a 2-0 win over Napoli.

The Germany international opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a beautifully guided side-foot volley from 18 yards, before setting up Olivier Giroud for the second minutes later.

Arsenal were excellent value for the win that leaves them joint top of their group after a blistering opening 15 minutes in which they had their Italian opponents on the ropes.

Napoli settled down in the second half, but the Serie A side rarely threatened Arsenal's lead.

There were impressive performances all over the pitch - Mathieu Flamini shut down Napoli's danger-man Marek Hamsik, Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny looked solid at the back and Giroud found the net again.

But with a goal and another assist, Özil was the pick of the bunch - and even Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was taken back by his display.

"Just sit there and enjoy it," Wenger said in the post-match press conference. "Of course he has given [us] a lift and belief to everyone at the club."

Arsenal face Borussia Dortmund next in the Champions League, a match between the two stand-out performers in a strong looking group.
