Werder Bremen are set to hand out of sorts Chelsea midfielder Kevin de Bruyne a lifeline, according to Sky Sports.

Chelsea bought Kevin de Bruyne from FC Genk on transfer deadline day in January last year for around £7million, and the young Belgian was immediately loaned back to Genk for the rest of the season.

For the 2012/13 season, De Bruyne was loaned out again, this time to Bremen. It would turnout to be the young attacking-midfielder’s breakthrough season as he helped himself to ten goals in 32 appearances for the Bundesliga club.

When he arrived back at Chelsea, Jose Mourinho assured the promising young Belgian he was a part of his future plans for the club but De Bruyne has started just two league games for Chelsea so far this season.

The playmaker is widely believed to have a fantastic amount of talent, with the potential to go on and be one of the finest of Belgium’s golden era. Of course, to reach this potential, De Bruyne needs maximum playing time.

He was of course left out of Chelsea’s squad to play Steau Bucharest on Tuesday, which led to Mourinho angrily responding when quizzed about this in his pre-match press conference.

Should this event indicate De Bruyne’s future at Chelsea may be limited, Werder Bremen would be at the top of list of clubs who would be interesting in securing this exciting young prospects signature, should the opportunity arise of course.

And Thomas Eichin, the general manager at Werder Bremen, has done little to refute claims that his club could be linked with a move for the Chelsea starlet.

He told Germany's Bild newspaper: "Should Kevin be unhappy, we are an eager first contact.

"I am in contact with his agent and am informed about Kevin's situation at Chelsea."

"I know Kevin, if he doesn't play it is certainly a big problem for him," Eichin added.

"Let's wait and see what happens in the winter. We will be ready, if there is a possibility, to get him."
