The NHL regular season started with one of the biggest rivalries in the game last night.

The Toronto Maple Leafs faced off against the Montreal Canadians in Montreal. Captain Dion Phaneuf, Tyler Bozak and recently acquired Mason Raymond led the team to a 4-3 victory over the Habs. Carey Price got the start for the Canadians, while James Reimer got the start for the Leafs.

This game was filled with everything a hockey fan could ask for. There were some great goals, spectacular saves, and bone-crushing hits. As with every rivalry, I knew there were going to be quite a few penalties, but I never expected the amount to be as high as it was last night.

There were 26 penalties handed out in last night’s game, which is approximately 70 minutes of penalty time. Five of these penalties were for fighting and two led to game misconducts. One fight even led to Canadians enforcer George Parros being carried off in a stretcher. Parros fell to the ice face first while tangled up with Leaf’s enforcer Colton Orr and was taken to hospital.
Parros suffered a concussion, and won’t be back in the Montreal lineup for quite some time.

Clearly, this game was not a standard season opener for either team. And even though, Montreal fan’s had to watch their team lose, I’m sure they were more concerned about the condition of George Parros in the end. Plus, it’s not as if the Canadians had a bad game.

Carey Price made 38 top quality saves, Lars Eller had a three point night, and the fans got to see some great hockey. However, in the end it was James Reimer who stole the show in this game. And so, at the end of this game, I reached one simple conclusion. And that is that rivals always end up fighting.

If this is what the first game of the season is like, I can’t wait to see what’ll happen when playoff hockey arrives.
