Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech has heaped praise on his teammates following their 4-0 victory over Steaua Bucharest in the Champions League.
The Blues travelled to Romania under pressure following their defeat at home to Basel in the opening Group E match, which came just four days after a loss at Everton in the Premier League.
However, victory over Fulham and a draw at Tottenham have now been backed-up with a convincing effort at the National Arena, with Ramires (2), Frank Lampard a Daniel Georgievski own goal making the difference.
It’s a result which puts the Blues back in contention to qualify for the knockout phase, and the Czech Republic international believes Jose Mourinho’s side got what they deserved last night.
“The way we played, both individually and as a team, was very nice to see. We truly deserved the 4-0 scoreline because we played really well, it was a great reaction after the first game and just what we needed. We went there to win, and we did, so we're very pleased,” he told the official Chelsea website.
"It was important to keep a clean sheet because you never know whether it will matter at the end of the group. Having lost the first game the group will obviously be tighter because we gave Basel a three-point advantage, but after the second round of matches everything is back to normal because they lost.
“A clean sheet is important for the confidence of everyone and of course for me as well.”
Cech believes the response from Chelsea has been the mark of a top quality side, bouncing back from the early-season disappointment of some poor results.
However, he’s eager not to have to repeat the trick later in the season, instead hoping that the club can get the right results in the first place in order to avoid a necessary reaction.
“When you have results like we did against Everton and Basel in the same week you wait for a reaction, and I think the reaction has been perfect,” added the experienced stopper.
“Since then we've had some good games and good performances. I think you see the real strength of a team when something like that happens, it's been a great reaction from us and hopefully we won't need to react like that again in the future because we will get the right results in the first place.
“It was the most difficult moment of the season so far for us, losing two games in a row was something we didn't want, but we are now back on track and that's very positive.”
