While many may argue that the FA Cup has lost its traditional magic, unfancied Wigan Athletic added some much-needed sparkle to the world's oldest domestic football competition last season by shocking Roberto Mancini's charges to lift the trophy for the first time in their history.
With the season barely a month old, this year's competition proper remains some way off. But while the country's biggest outfits are not yet thinking about an FA Cup run, scores of non-league sides have already begun their quest for unlikely glory.
And in these early rounds, it looks as if the goal of the season has already been scored. In a second qualifying round replay between St Neots Town and Canvey Island, Rene Steer netted what can only be adequately described as an absolute wonder goal.
Although the hosts eventually disappointingly lost 2-1 and were prevented from reaching the third qualifying round for only the second time in their history, fans will undoubtedly have been buoyed by such an incredible hit.
Following a St Neots corner, the visitors cleared and looked to move up the pitch as the ball trickled away approximately 40 yards from goal. While the danger looked to have been cleared, however, Steer had different ideas as he drove the ball with breathtaking power and technique and saw it rattle in off the underside of the crossbar.
Watch the footage of Steer's incredible goal above. It has to be seen to be believed.
